PENYUARAAN SANG LIYAN: PERSPEKTIF PATRICK SWEETING DALAM NOVEL JAIPONG DANCER

Jaipong Dancer adalah novel yang ditulis oleh seorang laki-laki Barat, Patrick Sweeting, yang mengangkat isu subordinasi perempuan sebagai liyan. Dalam novel ini, penggambaran Sweeting tentang perempuan sebagai liyan terkesan kontradiktif. Di satu sisi perempuan digambarkan sebagai liyan yang terpinggirkan dalam masyarakat, namun di sisi lain perempuan digambarkan sebagai sosok yang kuat, eksotik dan sulit ditundukkan. Permasalahannya adalah bagaimana Patrick Sweeting menyuarakan perempuan sebagai liyan dalam novelnyasehingga pertanyaannya mengerucut pada (1) bagaimana perempuan sebagai liyan disuarakan dalam novel (2) bagaimana perspektif pengarang terkait dengan persoalan perempuan sebagai liyan dalam novel. Untuk mengetahui penyuaraan perempuan sebagai liyan oleh pengarang, digunakan teori feminisme poskolonial Gayatri Spivak yaitu konsep white men saving brown women from brown men. Metode analisis tekstual digunakan untuk menemukan relasi-relasi serta bentuk penyuaraan pengarang dalam novel. Berdasarkan keseluruhan analisis yang dilakukan dapat disimpulkan bahwa perempuan sebagai liyan disuarakan oleh pengarang sebagai sosok perempuan yang kuat, eksotik dan sulit ditundukkan. Pengarang yang melalui tulisannya yang seolah-olah sedang melakukan proyek kebajikan dengan menyuarakan isu-isu terkait subordinasi perempuan Dunia Ketiga, pada kenyataannya justru membungkam suara perempuan Dunia Ketiga dan memenjarakannya di bawah kungkungan sterotipe dan prasangka.Perspektif yang digunakan pengarang untuk mendefiniskan Timur sama dengan perspektif kaum Orientalis lainnya. Suara perempuan Dunia Ketiga tetaplah menjadi representasi yang diciptakan oleh sudut pandang Barat.

Jaipong Dancer is a novel written by Patrick Sweeting, which rise the subordination issue of women as other. In this novel, Sweeting represents women as other in paradox. In one side, women are represented as other which is excluded from the society, but in the other side women are represented as (the one who are) strong, exotic and difficult to be overpowered. The problem is how Patrick Sweeting voices women as other in his novel and the research question is formulated as follows (1) how women as other are voiced in this novel (2) how is the writer's perspective related the problem of women as other in the novel. To understand the voicing of women as other by the writer, the researcher use postcolonial feminism by Gayatri Spivak especially the concept of white men are saving brown women from brown men. Textual analysis method is used to find out the relations and the form of the writer's voice in the novel. Based on the whole analysis, it can be concluded that women as other are voiced by the writer as the one who are strong, exotic and difficult to be overpowered. Through his work, the writer which is assumed doing civilising mission by voicing the issues related the subordination of women in the Third World, in fact silencing the voice of Third World women and imprisoned it under stereotype and prejudice. The perspective which is used by the writer to represent the East is same with other Orientalis's perspective. The voice of women in the Third World as depicted in the novel is created by the Western.
