The drama Waru: Hataraku no ga Kakko Warui Nante Dare ga Itta? or commonly referred to as Waru depicts the journey of Tanaka Maririn in pursuing career advancement. Throughout this process, Tanaka encounters numerous invisible barriers faced by female workers, as patriarchal values remain deeply rooted in her workplace. These invisible barriers that women and other minority groups face when attempting to attain higher positions in a male-dominated corporate hierarchy are referred to as the glass ceiling or garasu tenjou.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the themes and story facts of the drama Waru, to identify the realities of gender inequality and garasu tenjou in Japan, and to analyze how the garasu tenjou is depicted in the drama. This study employs the theory of fiction by Robert Stanton to analyze the theme and story facts and Ian Watt’s theory of literary sociology to analyze the social realities of gender inequality and the garasu tenjou in Japan, as well as its representation in Waru.
The results of this study reveal a resemblance between the garasu tenjou phenomenon occurring in Japanese workplaces and the one portrayed in the drama. Waru illustrates various barriers experienced by female workers in Japan, such as women’s lack of confidence to become leaders, gender stereotypes and discrimination, the old boy network, sexual harassment, and the double burden women face. The low percentage of women in managerial positions as a consequence of the garasu tenjou is also reflected in the drama Waru.
