Penjor is one of the ceremonial attributes used by the Tengger community, notably during the Yadnya Kasada ceremony. The beauty of the penjor attracts both local and international tourists. This distinctive feature raises questions about the meaning behind the penjor that stands tall in every visible corner. Nowadays, cultural heritage tends to diminish over time, leading to a lack of detailed information about the culture itself. This research on symbolic meaning aims to: 1) examine the form and design of the penjor used by the Tengger community in the Yadnya Kasada ceremony; 2) analyze the reasons behind the use of penjor in the Yadnya Kasada celebration. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method. The symbolic interpretation in this research uses Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis and Edmud Burke Feldman's theory as the observational knowledge of sensory elements and art functions.
The findings of this research identify several motif forms of the penjor in the Tengger community, including kolong-kolong motif, sriti motif, tulang lindung motif, and ringgitan. The artistic function of the penjor includes both personal, social functions, and physical function. Analysis of the penjor within the Tengger community reveals that it is a sign with meaning and significance involving three main elements known as trichotomy: icon, index, and symbol.
