Novel At Night All Blood is Black karya David Diop menceritakan tentang perjuangan psikologis seorang tentara Senegal yang kehilangan sahabat karibnya saat bertempur bersama Perancis dalam Perang Dunia Pertama.
David Diop’s At
Night All Blood is Black tells a story about the psychological struggle of
a Senegalese soldier after the death of his more-than-brother while fighting
with the French during World War One. This paper aims to identify and analyze
the steps of individuation undergone by the main character and the causes of
the main character’s distorted individuation. In conducting the research, Carl
Jung’s theory of archetype and individuation is employed as the main approach
to identify and analyze the stages and the result of individuation undergone by
the main characters since it is the most appropriate theory considering the
subject matter. The analysis is supported by
extensive library research, including peer-reviewed articles and scholarly
books relevant to Jungian psychology and literary analysis. he result
indicates that the main character has gone through his own stages of
individuation, marked by the presence of various archetypes, namely shadow,
persona, mother, and death and rebirth, which leads to his distorted
individuation. The main character’s distorted individuation is caused by his
inability to resolve his various archetypes, namely the mother and the shadow
and his rejection of the self.
