Chiisana Koi no Uta is a film by Kenya Hirata and released in 2019. This film tells the story of teenagers who live around the United States military base in Okinawa. The film talked about the social problems caused by the existence of the military base. This study aims to identify the social issues in consideration of the presence of the United States military base in the film Chiisana Koi no Uta and its relationship with reality in Okinawa.
The theory of fiction by Robert Stanton and the sociological literature theory by Ian Watt are used in this research. The fiction theory is used to analyze the themes and facts of the story, i.e. the characters and characterizations, settings, and the storylines of Chiisana Koi no Uta. Meanwhile, sociological literature theory is used to analyze the relationship between the author's ideology and social background to the filmmaking, the social reality that occurs in society, and how far the film reflects the social reality.
The result of this study indicate that there are similarities between the social problems that occur in society as a result of the presence of the United States military base in Okinawa and those depicted in the film. Chiisana Koi no Uta succeeds in addressing social problems such as crime, economic dependence, violation of norms, and differences in point of view between generations as happened in historical social reality.
