Interelasi Gerabah dan Keramik Pejaten Bali; Kajian Teknologi, Fungsi, dan Estetika

Gerabah merupakan bagian dari keramik berdasarkan bahan dan cara pembuatannya. Sebagian masyarakat membuat sebutan gerabah dan keramik untuk membedakan produknya berdasarkan tampilan dan tingkat pembakarannya. Desa Pejaten di Tabanan, Bali, merupakan satu-satunya desa sentra pembuatan gerabah sekaligus keramik yang sudah terbentuk secara turun temurun. Uniknya, perkembangan gerabah dan keramik di Pejaten terjadi seiring sejalan walaupun nampak tak saling bersentuhan. Adanya teknologi keramik tanpa disadari justru memperkuat karakter gerabah Pejaten secara teknis, fungsi dan estetika. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan paradigma desain yang objek penelitiannya mengamati fenomena budaya benda/rupa. Gerabah dan keramik di Pejaten merupakan objek material yang dibedah menggunakan enam aspek dari The Function Complex yang berlandaskan struktur kebudayaan Bali. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk: 1) mengungkap latar belakang yang melandasi motif perajin di Pejaten dalam menyikapi kehadiran teknologi keramik dari perspektif historis dan sosial budaya masyarakat Bali, 2) mengetahui karakteristik produk gerabah dan keramik yang ada di Pejaten, 3) mengetahui keberadaan dan relasi antara gerabah dan keramik Pejaten dalam konteks desain dengan perspektif estetik, ekonomi, dan fungsional perajin pejaten. Temuan dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa 1) terdapat dua alasan kuat mengapa para perajin gerabah di Pejaten tidak serta merta beralih menjadi produsen keramik, adalah karena adanya latar belakang historis yang menjadi keyakinan perajin untuk tetap memilih melestarikan gerabah, serta faktor ekonomi yang menyebabkan ketidakmampuan untuk menjadi produsen keramik, 2) perkembangan gerabah dan keramik secara bersamaan menyebabkan terjadinya saling mempengaruhi satu sama lain sehingga membentuk karakteristik produk gerabah dan keramik Pejaten yang khas dan berbeda dengan di tempat lainnya, 3) adanya interelasi antara gerabah dan keramik Pejaten yang terbentuk dari pengaruh teknologi, historis, dan budaya.

Pottery is part of ceramics based on the material and method of manufacture. Some people call them pottery and ceramics to distinguish their products based on their appearance and burning temperature degree. Pejaten Village in Tabanan, Bali, is the only village center for making pottery as well as ceramics that have been formed from generation to generation. Uniquely, the development of pottery and ceramics in Pejaten occurred in line even though they did not appear to touch each other. The existence of ceramic technology unconsciously strengthens the character of Pejaten pottery technically, functionally and aesthetically. This study uses a design paradigm approach where the object of research is to observe the phenomenon of object/visual culture. Pottery and ceramics in Pejaten are material objects that are dissected using six aspects of The Function Complex which are based on Balinese cultural structures. This study aims to: 1) reveal the background underlying the motives of craftsmen in Pejaten in addressing the presence of ceramic technology from the historical and socio-cultural perspectives of the Balinese people, 2) knowing the characteristics of pottery and ceramic products in Pejaten, 3) knowing the existence and relations between Pejaten pottery and ceramics in the context of design with an aesthetic, economic, and functional perspectives of Pejaten craftsmen. The findings in this study indicate that 1) there are two strong reasons why the pottery craftsmen in Pejaten did not immediately turn to become ceramic producers, namely because of the historical background that became the craftsmen's belief to continue to choose to preserve pottery, as well as economic factors that caused their inability to become ceramic producers, 2) the development of pottery and ceramics simultaneously causes mutual influence to one another so as to form the characteristics of Pejaten pottery and ceramics products that are unique and different from elsewhere, 3) there is an interrelationship between pottery and ceramics of Pejaten which is formed from the influence of technology, historical, and cultural.
