Representasi Bali dalam Novel Ayu Manda karya I Made Iwan Darmawan: Kajian Poskolonialisme

Tesis ini membahas tentang representasi Barat dan Timur yang terjadi pada masyarakat pascakolonial di Bali tahun 1960-an. Menggunakan konsep orientalisme Edward W. Said, analisis dalam novel Ayu Manda karya I Made Iwan Darmawan ini menunjukkan adanya narasi yang berisi tentang perbedaan pandangan antara BaratxTimur yang menimbulkan kompleksitas oposisi biner antara yang superior dan inferior. Timur digambarkan sebagai sebuah tempat yang penuh citra kedamaian, alami, liar, tidak beradab, dan eksotis, sedangkan Barat menjadi subjek yang ideal. Tokoh Timur direpresentasikan sebagai pihak yang 'memuja' Barat, tapi akar budaya Timur yang kuat menjadi solusi kontrol diri untuk tetap memegang adat ketimuran. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa novel Ayu Manda menawarkan suatu kritik yang berkaitan dengan bentuk orientalisme 'klise' pemaknaan representasi budaya Timur x Barat yang melekat pada masyarakat di era sekarang. Seperti konsep karma, melalui tokoh-tokohnya, penulis menggambarkan usahanya untuk mencoba menunjukkan bahwa orang Timur sebenarnya unik dan memiliki jati diri yang kuat, tapi tokoh utamanya justru menunjukkan sikap sebaliknya yang memiliki konsep berfikir ke-Barat-an. Di akhir cerita tokoh utama selalu mendapat perlawanan dari tokoh-tokoh pendukung. Pendapat dan usaha yang dilakukan selalu berhasil dipatahkan seolah kembali lagi ke awal cerita. Dalam novel ini juga ditunjukkan bahwa kehidupan masyarakat Bali sudah tidak bisa lepas dari kedatangan orang Barat dalam konteks pariwisata. Terjadinya beberapa pergeseran fungsi seni menunjukkan adanya pengaruh masuknya Barat. Hal ini juga menunjukkan bentuk penjajahan baru bernama neo kolonialisme.

This thesis discusses about the representation of West and East that occur in post-colonial societies in Bali 1960s. Using the concept of Orientalism Edward W. Said, the analysis in novel Ayu Manda works Iwan Darmawan I Made This suggests a narrative that contains the differences between the West x East which creates complexity binary opposition between superior and inferior. East described as a place full of imagery of peace, natural, wild, uncivilized, and exotic, while the West is the subject of the ideal. East figures represented as the parties 'adore' the West, but a strong Eastern cultural roots into a solution of self-control to keep hold of traditional oriental. The analysis showed that the novel Ayu Manda offers a critique regarding the form of orientalisme 'cliche' meaning representations Eastern cultures><Western attached to the public in the present era. As the concept of karma, through his characters, the author described his efforts to try to show that the Eastern people actually unique and has a strong identity, but the main character actually shows the opposite attitude that has the concept of thinking all the West's. At the end of the story the main character is always met with resistance from the supporting characters. Opinions and efforts have always been broken as if back again to the beginning of the story. In this novel also indicated that the Balinese life could not be separated from the arrival of Westerners in the context of tourism. The occurrence of some shift in the function of art shows the influence of the entry of the West. It also suggests a new form of colonialism called neocolonialism.
