The study examines the consumption practices of Pertalite and Pertamax fuels among Universitas Gadjah Mada students and their interpretation through the perspective of Jean Baudrillard’s consumer society theory. The background of this study is rooted in the argument that fuel choice is not merely a functional or technical-economic decision, but rather a product of state policy architecture and market mechanisms that systematically differentiate consumer categories. Therefore, this research aims to identify the formation and dynamics of these consumption practices in everyday life, as well as to examine how sign value is lived and negotiated. This study utilizes a qualitative method with an interpretative phenomenological approach. Informants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques, involving a total of ten consistent users of either Pertalite or Pertamax. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews, while the data was analyzed through four interpretative stages connected to Baudrillard’s concepts.
The results indicate that students' fuel consumption practices are shaped by family socialization, lived experience, trust in recommendations, and financial constraints. These practices are also dynamic, as they are continuously adjusted in response to queue friction, stock shortages, temporal urgency, everyday geography, and mobility fluctuations. At the symbolic level, Pertamax operates as a marker of engine quality and social status, the meaning of which is ambiguous and frequently contested within social circles. Conversely, the consumption of Pertalite undergoes a process of normalization as a form of conspicuous frugality and a representation of student rationality. In conclusion, the students who served as informants in this study are not passive entities entirely subjugated to energy policy structures or market mechanisms; rather, they possess high reflexivity to reject absolute status labeling and consciously negotiate sign value to contest symbolic boundaries within the campus social arena.
