This work examines the cinematographer's role in producing Jalaran Sukma (2026), a documentary about the self-actualization of Butong Idhar, a disabled artist and founder of Jogja Disability Arts in Yogyakarta. Grounded in the Social Model of Disability (Oliver, 2013) and Maslow's theory of Self-Actualization, this work argues that the cinematographer functions not merely as a technical executor, but as an ethical decision-maker who actively shapes how audiences perceive disability through every visual choice made. Over nine months of observational filming (May 2025–February 2026), the cinematographer translated a commitment to equality into concrete visual language through eye-level shots as a rejection of medical stereotyping, handheld camera and long takes as a form of respect for the subject's agency, and close-up exploration to build intimacy without exploitation. Post-production involved archival integration, a warm color palette as visual resistance against clinical representation, and observational sequence construction that positions the subject as an active agent rather than a passive object of spectacle. This work concludes that in disability documentary filmmaking, the cinematographer holds a crucial role as mediator between the subject's reality and the audience's perception: every visual decision is a political statement about equality, and cinematography thereby transforms from a technical tool into an ethical medium capable of deconstructing stigma and expanding the space for dignified representation of people with disabilities.
