This thesis examines the representation of magical realism in David Diop's novel Frère d'âme and its function as a critique of colonialism. The study was conducted by identifying narratives that incorporate magical elements into the experiences of the main character, Alfa Ndiaye, and analyzing how these elements shape the world within the novel and influence the understanding of the war experience. This study aims to understand how magical realism is represented in the novel and how these elements enable the emergence of a critique of colonial domination in the understanding of human experience. This study employs the characteristics of magical realism formulated by Wendy B. Faris and the typology of faith and irreverence developed by Christopher Warnes to address the research questions. The data in this study are classified based on five characteristics of magical realism, such as irreducible elements, unsettling doubts, merging realms, phenomenal worlds, and the disturbance of time, space, and identity, and analyzed using a qualitative-descriptive approach. Furthermore, the concepts of faith and irreverence are employed to understand how the narrative positions magical elements in relation to the colonial context. The findings reveal that the novel Frère d'âme presents a narrative world that brings together the experience of colonial war with Senegalese spiritual cosmology. The presence of magical elements allows the characters' experiences to be understood through multiple frameworks of thought. The narrative reveals a tension between the Western rational framework, which interprets the characters' experiences as war trauma, and the local cosmology, which views these experiences through the relationship between spirit, body, and identity. Through the framework of faith, magical elements are treated as integral to the narrative world and connected to the local belief system. Meanwhile, through the framework of irreverence, the narrative introduces magical elements to challenge the dominant rational perspective within colonial discourse. Thus, magical realism in Frère d'âme functions as a representational strategy that opens space for non-Western perspectives in understanding the experience of colonial war and offers a critique of colonial epistemological dominance.
