The novel Shayou by Dazai Osamu is a postwar Japanese literary work that represents the transformation of aristocratic life following Japan’s defeat in World War II. The social transformation of this period affected not only political and economic structures but also reshaped class systems and social values. Through its main characters, particularly Naoji and Kazuko, the novel portrays identity crisis, loss of social legitimacy, and individual struggles in confronting a fundamentally transformed social arena.
This study aims to analyze the identity crisis and social transformation of the characters in Shayou using Pierre Bourdieu’s sociology of literature approach. The concepts of habitus, capital, and arena are employed to explain the relationship between postwar Japanese social restructuring and the dynamics of identity formation. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis of relevant narrative and dialogue excerpts from the novel.
The findings reveal that the identity crisis emerges from the mismatch between the internalized aristocratic habitus and the postwar social arena, whose social and economic transformations altered the position and influence of the aristocratic class. Naoji represents the failure to adapt to these structural changes, while Kazuko demonstrates the possibility of transformation through adaptive strategies and capital management. Identity in Shayou is therefore shaped through a dynamic relationship between social structure and individual practice within a context of historical change.
