Elemen-elemen Realisme Magis dan Konteks Sosial Budaya dalam Cerita Lisan di Kabupaten Brebes, Jawa Tengah

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi elemen realisme magis serta konteks sosial budaya dalam sepuluh cerita lisan yang hidup di masyarakat Kabupaten Brebes. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori realisme magis Wendy B. Faris dengan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara dengan penutur cerita lisan, perekaman, serta dokumentasi. Cerita yang diperoleh dari tuturan lisan kemudian ditranskripsikan dari bentuk lisan ke dalam bentuk tulisan untuk dianalisis. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahapan reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan simpulan.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa realisme magis hadir secara dominan dalam sepuluh cerita lisan Brebes melalui peristiwa-peristiwa supranatural yang tidak dapat dijelaskan secara rasional, tetapi diterima secara wajar oleh tokoh dan masyarakat, seperti perubahan wujud manusia menjadi makhluk supranatural, keberadaan penjaga gaib, serta mitos tempat keramat. Selain itu, cerita-cerita tersebut juga mencerminkan konteks sosial budaya masyarakat Brebes, yang meliputi sistem kepercayaan terhadap dunia gaib, tradisi ziarah ke petilasan dan makam tokoh sakral, penghormatan terhadap leluhur, serta penerimaan sosial terhadap mitos yang diwariskan secara turun-temurun. Dengan demikian, cerita lisan Brebes tidak hanya menampilkan karakteristik realisme magis, tetapi juga merepresentasikan nilai budaya dan sistem kepercayaan masyarakat pendukungnya.

This study aims to identify the elements of magical realism and the socio-cultural context in ten oral stories circulating in the community of Brebes Regency. This research employs Wendy B. Faris’s theory of magical realism with a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation, interviews with oral storytellers, recordings, and documentation. The oral narratives obtained from the storytellers were then transcribed from spoken form into written texts for analysis. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.

The findings show that magical realism appears dominantly in the ten oral stories of Brebes through supernatural events that cannot be explained rationally but are accepted as normal by the characters and the community. These include transformations of humans into supernatural beings, the presence of supernatural guardians, and myths surrounding sacred places. In addition, these stories also reflect the socio-cultural context of the Brebes community, including beliefs in the supernatural world, pilgrimage traditions to sacred sites and the graves of revered figures, respect for ancestors, and the social acceptance of myths transmitted across generations. Therefore, the oral stories of Brebes not only present characteristics of magical realism but also represent the cultural values and belief systems of the supporting community.
