Peran Konstruksi Formula Zombie pada Popularitas Serial The Last of Us: Kajian Genre Cawelti

Karya sastra memiliki banyak bentuk, salah satunya adalah serial televisi. Seperti karya sastra lainnya, genre berperan penting dalam mengategorikan serial televisi. Salah satu genre yang sedang populer saat ini adalah zombie, yang berasal dari cerita spiritual Haiti dan berkembang seiring waktu menjadi cerita pasca-apokaliptik dengan wabah mematikan yang membangkitkan mayat dan menyerang manusia. Salah satu serial televisi zombie yang sedang populer saat ini adalah The Last of Us.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah mengkaji kontribusi konstruksi formula zombie terhadap popularitas The Last of Us. Teori formula dari Cawelti digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi konvensi dan invensi dalam serial ini, dalam prosesnya, penelitian ini didukung oleh data primer dan sekunder. Metode semiotika Roland Barthes digunakan sebagai alat bantu untuk menafsirkan makna dan membongkar konstruksi formula zombie dalam serial The Last of Us.

Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa The Last of Us memanfaatkan konvensi formula zombie yang sudah mapan sebagai pondasi, seperti penjelasan wabah, konflik manusia-zombie, lanskap dunia yang hancur, dan konstruksi narasi pada umumnya. Sementara itu, invensi yang ditawarkan serial ini meliputi asal usul wabah, mekanisme penyebaran yang kompleks, evolusi bentuk zombie, fokus naratif yang lebih intim, serta tempo penceritaan yang lebih lambat dan emosional. Inovasi ini mendorong berbagai respons audiens, menciptakan ruang diskusi terkait kebaruan yang mereka terima. Antusiasme tersebut tecermin dalam pencapaian rating yang sangat tinggi, menjadikan The Last of Us sebagai salah satu serial zombie paling sukses sepanjang sejarah.

Literary works take many forms, one of which is the television series. Like other literary works, genre plays a crucial role in categorizing television series. One genre that has gained significant popularity in recent years is zombie, which originated from Haitian spiritual stories and evolved over time into post-apcalyptic narratives involving deadly outbreaks that reanimate corpses and threaten humanity. One of the most popular zombie television series today is The Last of Us.

The objective of this study is to examine how the construction of the zombie formula contributes to the popularity of The Last of Us. Cawelti’s theory of formula is used to identify the conventions and inventions present in the series. In the process, the research is supported by both primary and secondary data. Roland Barthes’ semiotic method is used as an analytical tool to interpret meaning and deconstruct the zombie formula that is constructed within The Last of Us series.

This study finds that The Last of Us utilized well-established zombie formula conventions as its foundation, such as the explanation of the outbreak, human-zombie conflicts, a devastated world landscape, and general narrative structure. Meanwhile, the series introduce several inventions, including the origin of the outbreak, a complex transmission mechanism, the evolution of zombie, a more intimate narrative focus, and a slower, more emotionally driven storytelling pace. These innovations have triggered diverse audience responses, creating a space worth of discussion regarding inventions they receive. This enthusiasm is reflected in the series’ high ratings, making The Last of Us as one of the most successful zombie series in television history.
