Jejak-Jejak Konstruksi Perang Dingin dalam Fight Club Karya Chuck Palahniuk: Kajian Egoisme Max Stirner

Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi novel Fight Club karya Chuck Palahniuk, yang mengisahkan kehidupan monoton dari Narrator. Kehadiran Tyler Durden sebagai alter ego dari Narrator menjadi bentuk resistensinya terhadap nilai-nilai dominan dan menawarkan alternatif bagi keterasingannya melalui sebuah persatuan bernama “Fight Club” serta Project Mayhem. Kerangka teoritis yang digunakan adalah egoisme dari Max Stirner, yang menjadi dasar dalam mengkaji narasi pemberontakan individu dengan fokus pada interaksi antara fixed ideas dan dissolution of mind dalam proses menemukan kembali The Unique. Selain itu, penelitian ini menyoroti jejak-jejak konstruksi pasca-Perang Dingin dalam dinamika pembentukan Union of Egoists.

Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif. Data diperoleh melalui studi pustaka, dengan novel Fight Club sebagai sumber utama dan karya-karya yang berkaitan dengan pemikiran Stirner sebagai bahan tambahan. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menelusuri perjalanan Narrator dalam usahanya membebaskan diri dari ide-ide sosial yang mengikatnya. Proses tersebut dipetakan berdasarkan konsep dari Stirner, sebelum akhirnya dihubungkan dengan jejak-jejak konstruksi sosial-politik Perang Dingin.

Berdasarkan hasil analisis, dapat disimpulkan bahwa konflik ideologis selama Perang Dingin tidak hanya memengaruhi tatanan global, tetapi juga menciptakan fixed ideas yang meliputi konformitas, konsumtivisme, dan kapitalisme. Metode dissolution of mind yang digunakan penghancuran diri, aksi sabotase, dan percobaan untuk meruntuhkan peradaban modern. Interaksi keduanya berhasil membawa Narrator menemukan kembali The Unique. Upaya tersebut mengarah pada pembentukan Union of Egoists, sebuah persatuan tanpa hierarki dan terdesentralisasi. Meskipun dissolution of mind berhasil untuk membebaskan Narrator dari fixed idea, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa proses tersebut rentan bertransformasi menjadi fixed idea baru dikarenakan kondisi sosial-politik pada masa pasca-Perang Dingin.

This study explores Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Fight Club, which narrates the monotonous life of the Narrator. The presence of Tyler Durden as the Narrator’s alter ego represents his resistance to dominant values and offers an alternative to his alienation through a union called "Fight Club" and Project Mayhem. The theoretical framework employed is Max Stirner’s egoism, serving as the basis for examining the narrative of individual rebellion with a focus on the interaction between fixed ideas and the dissolution of mind in the process of rediscovering The Unique. Additionally, this study highlights traces of post-Cold War constructions in the dynamics of forming the Union of Egoists.

The research adopts a qualitative method. Data is collected through library research, with Fight Club as the primary source and works related to Stirner’s philosophy as supplementary materials. Data analysis is conducted by tracing the Narrator’s journey in liberating himself from binding social ideas. This process is mapped using Stirner’s concepts before being connected to the traces of Cold War socio-political constructions.

Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the ideological conflicts of the Cold War not only influenced the global order but also created fixed ideas encompassing conformity, consumerism, and capitalism. The dissolution of mind method—manifested in self-destruction, acts of sabotage, and attempts to dismantle modern civilization—enabled the Narrator to rediscover The Unique. These efforts culminated in the formation of the Union of Egoists, a non-hierarchical and decentralized union. However, while the dissolution of mind succeeded in freeing the Narrator from fixed ideas, this study finds that the process is vulnerable to transforming into a new fixed idea due to the socio-political conditions of the post-Cold War era.
