This research is motivated by indications that anonymity on social media affects the meaning of human relationships. The philosophical thoughts of Emmanuel Levinas provide an interpretation of these indications through the concept of the "Other's Face" (Wajah Yang Lain). In this context, the study aims to elucidate the meaning of human relationships in the anonymity of social media using Levinas's concept of the "Other's Face."
The research is qualitative in nature, employing a research model based on actual problems with data collection techniques primarily from literature, including books, scholarly journals, and other relevant academic works related to both formal and material objects. The method utilized in this research is philosophical hermeneutics, incorporating methodical elements such as interpretation, holistics, and description.
The findings reveal that the influence of anonymity on social media concerning human relationships creates ambivalence, indicating simultaneous contradictions gathered from previous research results. Moreover, through the lens of Levinas's concept of the "Other's Face," the research shows that anonymity on social media is the root cause of the disappearance of meaning in human relationships. This is due to the reduction of humans into impersonal entities or figures. Levinas argues that this reduction is equivalent to erasing the "Face," a term he uses to describe humans as fully exposed and whole beings. The effacement of the "Face" in interactions or dynamic experiences allows for dehumanization and potentially destructive relationships.
