West Sumatra Province is one of the provinces in Indonesia which is well known for its different culture from other provinces, namely the culture of Minangkabau tribe. Minangkabau tribe has a variety of unique culture, such as the traditional houses, traditional clothing, traditional events, and traditional arts. These traditional arts include performing arts, which is divided into theater arts, dance arts, and musical arts.

There are 26 types of performing arts listed as intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. It shows that there is so many types of performing arts originated from West Sumatra. However, this diversity is less sustainable due to lack of facilities to support any perfoming arts activities in West Sumatra. Therefore, we need a facility located in Padang City that can facilitate all types of performing arts activities, such as performing arts performance, training, or simply a gathering place for all performing art communities in West Sumatra.

The author plans an idea for designing a cultural performing arts center in Padang City, West Sumatra which aims to accommodate all types of Minangkabau traditional arts, such as theater arts, dance arts, music arts, and fine arts. This plan can also help Padang City in terms of toursim by attracting tourists to come to watch various art performances held at the performing arts center. In the design process, the author applies an eco-cultural architecture approach with several aspects that has to be fulfilled in implementing the approach to the design, such as image of space, idealized concept of space, building image, source of environmental knowledge, and technologies.
