Analisis strategi diversifikasi PT Pelita Air Service ke dalam bisnis penerbangan berjadwal

The scheduled commercial aviation industry during the Covid-19 pandemic from 2019 to 2022 experienced a very large decline. The number of domestic passengers in 2018 reached 101 million per year, dropping to 35 million in 2020. This has pushed airlines to reduce their capacity and caused difficulties in the airline's financial performance. So that during the recovery period in 2022, airline capacity will lag behind demand, as reported by the DKPPU (Directorate of Airworthiness and Aircraft Operations) in November 2022, that of the 569 aircraft registered with scheduled airlines, only around 50% of the fleet are in operational.
PAS as a charter airline took advantage of the momentum of this capacity scarcity to diversify into scheduled flights in April 2022 and compete with experienced and large players in an industry with a level of competition that tends to be high under normal conditions. This raises doubts about the ability to survive and develop where it is interesting to analyze PAS diversification using framework Porter's three essential tests.
The analysis was carried out using a descriptive qualitative method which took primary data from the results of in-depth interviews with three decision makers of the company as well as secondary data obtained from relevant sources. The analysis results show that diversification into the scheduled aviation industry is still feasible to enter by considering the size of the market share and its growth rate. This new business also has the potential to return initial capital and use existing resources in the main business in the new business, so that PAS can produce synergies in the resources needed by both.
PAS must use the momentum of only 2-3 years to immediately grow big and create uniqueness and superiority in its products. Also exploiting additional income potential such as cargo transportation, food sales, souvenirs and travel packages. As well as building customer loyalty through loyalty programs and collaboration between airlines (code share) to expand services and networks.
