This
research explores the relationship between the concepts of nationalism and
Twitter in the Indonesian context. This study emphasized on the study of media,
particularly Twitter. The theory of media ecology coined by Marshall
McLuhan is the main theory utilized to investigate these concepts. Furthermore,
Benedict Anderson and Michael Billig's concepts of nationalism are employed to
analyze the concept of nationalism as well. Thus, this study is intended to
capture the media ecology of Twitter in the context of nationalism in
Indonesia. Hence, this research has an urgency in mapping Twitter's
implications in the formation and spread of nationalism in Indonesia. This
research uses a constructivist paradigm using a qualitative approach. Prior to doing
the investigation, the researcher collected quantitative data extracted from
Twitter. Twitter data collection employs NodeXL Professional for Academic
software. The following stage was an inductive in-depth analysis of the
collected data. This research more specifically takes 2021 and 2022. The reason
for taking this period is the high use of social media, including Twitter, due
to the emergence of the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The findings indicate that
Twitter has become a 'hub' for the formation and diffusion of nationalism in
Indonesia. Twitter has emerged as a wireless global village that
connects nationalism conversations on Indonesian national holidays. Twitter has
emerged as a platform that fosters a unique form of hybrid nationalism unique
to Indonesia. Twitter has also given rise to new meanings of Sumpah Pemuda and
redefined the concept of Indonesian heroes. This research emphasizes the
criticality of utilizing Twitter in relation to nationalism. Twitter can be
used as a platform for the formation and dissemination of nationalism from the
perspective of Indonesian citizens.
