The Bell Jar karya Sylvia Plath (1963) mengangkat isu-isu terkait gangguan mental pada tahun 1950 an di Amerika melalui seorang karakter perempuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas penyebab-penyebab dan akibat-akibat gangguan mental pada Esther Greenwood. Penelitian dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan metode penelitiaan kepustakaan. Data diperoleh dari kutipan-kutipan dalam The Bell Jar dan dianalisis menggunakan teori Psikoanalitik. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tiga penyebab gangguan mental pada Esther Greenwood. Penyebab yang pertama adalah perjuangan untuk melawan dan beradaptasi terhadap ekspektasi masyarakat karena Esther Greenwood memegang kepercayaan untuk tidak patuh terhadap ekspektasi masyarakat. Penyebab yang kedua adalah konflik dalam dirinya yang mengantarkan dia kepada kegilaan. Terakhir, trauma masa kecil yang belum terselesaikan akibat dari kehilangan ayah pada usia belia memperburuk kondisi mentalnya. Dampak dari gangguan mental pada Esther Greenwood adalah ketidakmampuan untuk menjalin berbagai hubungan seperti hubungan antara Esther dengan ibunya, teman-temannya, dan dengan laki-laki. Beberapa percobaan bunuh diri menunjukkan dampak lain dari gangguan mental. Dampak-dampak ini menunjukkan betapa besarnya gangguan mental berpengaruh terhadap kehidupan seseorang.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (1963) raises issues related to mental illness during 1950s America through a woman character. This research aims to examine the causes and effects of the mental illness of Esther Greenwood. The research was conducted using the library research method. The data were obtained from the excerpts in The Bell Jar and analyzed using the psychoanalytic theory. The result shows the three causes of Esther Greenwood's mental illness. The first one is the struggle to fight and adapt to societal expectations because Esther Greenwood holds a belief that does not let her conform to societal expectations. The second reason is that the conflicts within herself lead her to sanity. Lastly, the unresolved childhood trauma from losing her father at an early age also declines her mental state. The effect of Esther Greenwood's mental illness is the inability to engage in different relationships, such as the relationship between Esther and her mother, friends, and men. Esther's several suicide attempts portray another effect of mental illness. These effects show how mental illness immensely affects one's life.
