Japan is currently undergoing a significant cultural transformation related to its patriarchal culture. The patriarchal culture has caused several problems such as declining birth rates and slowing economic growth. To overcome these problems, the Japanese government began campaigning for several gender mainstreaming policies, one of which is ikumen. Ikumen is a term used to describe a father who participates in domestic affairs and childcare. The phenomenon of ikumen is interesting to study because the government is trying to destroy stereotypes and stigmas about fathers and mothers that have been formed in patriarchal construction in Japan.
This research aims to understand and acknowledge the destruction of stigmas and stereotypes about traditional gender roles through the ikumen phenomenon. The analysis is conducted using Jacques Derrida's theory of deconstruction which assumes that meaning is unstable and always changing. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with literature study data collection techniques sourced from relevant websites, books and journals. The results showed that there are several factors behind the phenomenon of ikumen, including the declining birth rate and the stagnant level of the Japanese economy. In addition, it is also found how binary opposition is present in the construction of patriarchy which is then destroyed by the phenomenon of ikumen. The phenomenon of ikumen makes the meaning of the binary opposition unstable. The role of fathers who previously worked in the public sector and mothers who worked in the domestic sector then turned into a new stereotype of the role of fathers and mothers who both take care of children and work in the public and domestic sectors.
