Four's Identity Development in Veronica Roth's Four: A Divergent Collection

Perkembangan identitas merupakan proses yang signifikan pada masa remaja dimana seseorang beralih dari masa kanak-kanak menuju masa dewasa. Proses ini merupakan salah satu topik yang dibahas dalam Four: A Divergent Collection karya Veronica Roth, sebuah prekuel dalam seri buku Divergent. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas perkembangan identitas sang karakter utama, Four, dalam koleksi cerita pendek karya Roth dengan menggunakan teori status identitas oleh James E. Marcia. Penelitian ini juga akan membahas mekanisme pertahanan yang digunakan oleh Four dan pengaruh mekanisme pertahanan tersebut terhadap perkembangan identitas Four menggunakan teori psikoanalisis oleh Sigmund Freud dan konsep mekanisme pertahanan oleh Anna Freud. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa Four mengalami tiga status identitas: difusi identitas, moratorium identitas, dan pencapaian identitas. Hasil juga menunjukkan bahwa Four menggunakan tujuh mekanisme pertahanan, dimana formasi reaksi, penyangkalan, dan rasionalisasi merupakan tiga mekanisme yang paling sering digunakan. Penggunaan mekanisme pertahanan mempengaruhi perkembangan identitas Four, terutama pada perkembangan egonya. Mekanisme pertahanan tersebut berkontribusi untuk melindungi ego Four terhadap kecemasan atau kegelisahan berlebihan, terutama di saat status atau tahapan difusi identitas dan moratorium identitas yang menunjukkan keberadaan krisis dan kecemasan.

Identity development is a significant process during adolescence as one transition from childhood into adulthood. This process is one of the topics highlighted in Veronica Roth's Four: A Divergent Collection (2014), a prequel to the Divergent series. This research aims to discuss the main character, Four's identity development in Roth's short story collection by applying James E. Marcia's identity status theory. Furthermore, it also discusses Four's use of defense mechanisms to cope with his trauma and the influence of defense mechanisms on his identity development by applying Sigmund Freud's theory of psychoanalysis and Anna Freud's concept of defense mechanism. The results indicate that Four experiences three identity statuses: identity diffusion, identity moratorium, and identity achievement. The results also indicate that Four uses seven defense mechanisms, with reaction formation, denial, and rationalization as his three most frequently used defenses. The use of defense mechanisms influences his identity development, particularly in the development of his ego. The defenses contribute to protecting his ego against overwhelming anxiety or stress, especially during identity diffusion and identity moratorium, the statuses where crisis and anxiety are present.
