Syair Singapura Terbakar: Analisis Latar Robert Stanton

Penelitian ini membahas latar yang terdapat dalam Syair Singapura Terbakar karya Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi. Syair ini menceritakan kebakaran ketika malam perayaan Cap Go Meh di Singapura pada tahun 1830. Syair ini termasuk syair sejarah karena menceritakan peristiwa yang benar-benar terjadi pada saat itu. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu menganalisis unsur dan fungsi latar dalam Syair Singapura Terbakar. Penelitian ini dilakukan menggunakan teori Robert Stanton. Stanton membagi latar menjadi lima jenis, yaitu latar yang terlihat, latar berwujud waktu-waktu tertentu (hari, bulan, dan tahun), iklim dan cuaca, periode sejarah, dan orang-orang yang menjadi dekor. Dari hasil penelitian diketahui terdapat empat unsur latar dalam Syair Singapura Terbakar, yaitu latar yang terlihat, latar berwujud waktu-waktu tertentu, latar iklim dan cuaca, dan orang-orang yang menjadi dekor. Latar yang terlihat dan orang-orang yang menjadi dekor merupakan unsur yang mendominasi dalam syair. Hal itu disebabkan Syair Singapura Terbakar bersifat sejarah sehingga penggambaran tempat berlangsungnya peristiwa dan tokoh-tokoh yang melatarbelakanginya merupakan hal yang dominan. Fungsi latar dalam syair yaitu sebagai penggambaran suasana hati tokoh dalam menghadapi suatu peristiwa.

This research is discussing the setting in Syair Singapura Terbakar by Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi. The poem tells about big fires that occurred on the night of Lantern Festival in Singapore years 1830. The poem belongs to a historical poem because it tells of an event that actually happened at that time. The purpose of this research is to analyse elements and functions of the setting in Syair Singapura Terbakar. This research was conducted using theory stated by Robert Stanton. Stanton divides the setting into five categories namely the visible background, the time of the day or year, the weather and climates, the historical periods and the people in the background. The research shows that there’s four elements of setting in Syair Singapura Terbakar specifically visible background, the time of the day or year, the weather and climates, and the people in the background. The visible background and the people in the background is the dominant elements in the poem, that is because Syair Singapura Terbakar is historical poem so the description of places where the event took place and the characters behind it is the dominant part of the story. From the setting it can be seen how the mood of the characters while facing of an event.
