Di Prancis, Islam diasosiasikan dengan imigran karena masuknya Islam ke Prancis dibawa oleh imigran yang dipekerjakan di Prancis sejak abad 17. Perbedaan latar sejarah, budaya, etnis dan ras menimbulkan konflik sehingga menyebabkan terjadinya xenophobia yang berkembang menjadi islamophobia. Michel Houellebecq adalah salah satu penulis Prancis yang mengangkat isu-isu Islam ke dalam novel-novelnya. Dengan menggunakan konsep identitas sosial yang dikemukakan oleh Richard Jenkins, penelitian ini mengeksplorasi transformasi identitas sosial Islam di Prancis dan hubungannya dengan sekularisme Prancis. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menjelaskan posisi pengarang dalam menarasikan identitas sosial Islam dan respon masyarakat Prancis terhadap benturan Islam dan sekularisme. Melalui proses interaksi dan identifikasi, konstruksi Islam sebagai identitas sosial terbagi menjadi dua berdasarkan actual identity dan virtual identity-nya. Dua gagasan kontradiktif mengenai Islam yang dibangun pengarang di dalam dua novel menunjukkan bahwa pengarang hanya memanfaatkan Islam untuk menjelaskan fenomena sosial di Prancis.

France's society often associates Islam with immigrants because Islam was brought to France by immigrant workers since the 17th century. Having differences in historical background, culture, ethnicity, and races conduce conflicts and thus results in xenophobia and later worsen to be islamophobia. Michel Houellebecq is one of a French writer who points out issues regarding Islam in his works. Using the concept of social identity by Richard Jenkins, this research explores the transformation of Islamic social identity in France and its relationship with French secularism. This research also attempts to show the author's position in narrating Islamic social identity and the response of French society to the clash of Islam and secularism. Through the process of interaction and identification, the construction of Islam as a social identity is divided into two, based on its actual identity and virtual identity. Two opposite ideas about Islam portrayed in the two novels indicate that the author takes Islam for granted to explain social phenomena in France.
