Peran globalisasi dalam arus kehidupan membawa perubahan dalam berbagai aspek, seperti aspek sosial, ekonomi, politik, dan budaya. Titik awal globalisasi terletak pada perkembangan teknologi yang kemudian mendukung penerimaan budaya populer. Kehadiran budaya populer atau media massa -termasuk film- di tengah masyarakat sebenarnya bisa dilihat dari perspektif ekonomi, politik, dan budaya. Globalisasi membantu peredaran dan pertukaran budaya yang kemudian dapat dipertukarkan secara ekonomi pula dan kemudian menjadi komoditas industri, dan memunculkan sebuah industri baru bernama industri budaya yang didalamnya termasuk industri film. Perkembangan industri perfilman di Indonesia melewati proses panjang dan perjalanan yang berbeda-beda di setiap rezim yang memimpin. Hal ini disebabkan oleh kepentingan yang melatarbelakangi rezim tersebut. Latar belakang sejarah disetiap perjalanan industri perfilman menjadi sebuah cerminan dan kunci perjalanan industri film pada masa-masa berikutnya. Setiap proses produksi, distribusi, dan konsumsi film melibatkan banyak aktor serta terdapat peristiwa-peristiwa yang melingkupinya. Rencana produksi film Bumi Manusia (2019) membawa tekanan berat karena karya film ini merupakan karya adaptasi dari novel legendaris, sakral, serta mempunyai jutaan penggemar yang pastinya memiliki ekspektasi akan keberhasilannya. Hal inilah yang kemudian mengundang kontroversi. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus, penelitian ini menganalisis mengenai bagaimana proses produksi hingga konsumsi film Bumi Manusia (2019) karya Hanung Bramantyo dalam perspektif ekonomi politik. Wawancara dengan aktor film juga dilakukan dalam penelitian ini, serta melakukan studi pustaka artikel-artikel yang memuat kontroversi dan statement Hanung Bramantyo yang menanggapi banyaknya kontroversi yang muncul. Dalam membaca dan menganalisis, penelitian ini menggunakan perspektif ekonomi politik. Penelitian ini menganalisis secara makro, bagaimana ekonomi politik yang terjadi dalam proses produksi, distribusi, dan konsumsi film Bumi Manusia (2019). Dari paparan produksi, distribusi, dan konsumsi film Bumi Manusia tersebut, diketahui bahwa telah terjadi relasi atau praktik ekonomi politik, yaitu berupa pendangkalan atau reduksi cerita, pemilihan aktor atas dasar hitungan keuntungan tanpa mempertimbangkan kecocokan peran, dan terdapat pemanfaatan ruang film Bumi Manusia oleh negara sebagai ruang populisme.

The role of globalization in the flow of life brings changes in various aspects, such as social, economic, political, and cultural aspects. The starting point of globalization lies in technological development which then supports the acceptance of popular culture. The presence of popular culture or mass media - including films - in the midst of society can actually be seen from an economic, political and cultural perspective. Globalization helps the circulation and cultural exchange which can then be exchanged economically as well and then become an industrial commodity, and bring up a new industry called the cultural industry which includes the film industry. The development of the film industry in Indonesia goes through a long process and different trips in each leading regime. This is caused by the interests underlying the regime. The historical background of each film industry journey becomes a reflection and key of the film industry's journey in the following periods. Every film production, distribution and consumption process involves many actors and there are events surrounding it. The plan for the production of This Earth of Mankind film (2019) brings heavy pressure because this film is an adaptation of a legendary, sacred novel, and has millions of fans who certainly have expectations for its success. This is what later invited controversy. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, this study analyzes how the production process up to the consumption of This Earth of Mankind film (2019) by Hanung Bramantyo in the perspective of political economy. Interviews with film actors were also carried out in this research, as well as conducting a literature review of articles containing controversies and statements of Hanung Bramantyo that responded to the many controversies that emerged. In reading and analyzing, this research uses the perspective of political economy. This study analyzes macro, how the political economy that occurs in the process of production, distribution, and consumption of This Earth of Mankind film (2019). From the exposure of the production, distribution, and consumption of This Earth of Mankind film (2019), it is known that there has been a relation or practice of political economy, namely in the form of superficiality or reduction of stories, the selection of actors based on the calculation of profits without considering the compatibility of roles, and there is a use of This Earth of Mankind film (2019) film space by the state as a space of populism.
