Aneka Fungsi Kespesifikan Latar Novel Laut Bercerita Karya Leila S. Chudori

Penelitian ini menggunakan objek material berupa novel Laut Bercerita karya Leila S. Chudori dan objek formal berupa teori latar. Permasalahan utama dalam penelitian ini adalah aneka fungsi kespesifikan latar novel Laut Bercerita karya Leila S. Chudori yang meliputi identifikasi unsur-unsur latar, fungsi-fungsi latar, serta hubungan antarlatar dan antarunsur novel. Pemilihan novel Laut Bercerita karya Leila S. Chudori sebagai objek material penelitian ini berdasarkan beberapa alasan. Pertama, novel Laut Bercerita memiliki latar yang lengkap dengan karakteristiknya sehingga bersifat tipikal. Kedua, latar berfungsi spesifik yang ditandai dengan pengangkatan unsur sejarah Indonesia serta fungsi latarnya yang mampu menggambarkan kondisi sosial suatu masyarakat dan memberikan sebuah kritik sosial. Ketiga, terdapat hubungan antarunsur novel Laut Bercerita yang sifatnya saling memperkuat. Metode penelitian ini terbagi menjadi dua, yaitu metode pengumpulan data dan metode analisis data. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui studi pustaka untuk memperoleh fakta-fakta empiris dalam bentuk data kualitatif metode deskriptif analitik. Metode analisis data menggunakan metode deskriptif analitik yang dilakukan dengan cara mendeskripsikan fakta-fakta, berupa unsur-unsur latar, fungsi-fungsi latar, serta hubungan antarlatar dan hubungan antarunsur novel, yang kemudian disusul dengan analisis terhadap fakta-fakta tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut. Pertama, novel Laut Bercerita terdiri atas latar tempat, waktu, dan sosial. Latar tempat meliputi latar mayor dan minor. Latar waktu meliputi tahun 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, dan 2007. Latar sosial dapat dilihat berdasarkan kelas sosial atas, menengah, dan bawah tokoh-tokohnya. Kedua, latar novel Laut Bercerita memiliki kespesifikan fungsi yakni sebagai unsur metaforis, sebagai atmosfer, dan sebagai kritik sosial. Ketiga, hubungan antarlatar novel Laut Bercerita adalah hubungan yang koheren. Unsur latar memiliki hubungan dengan unsur-unsur novel lainnya. Unsur-unsur tersebut adalah tokoh, alur, judul, dan tema. Hubungan antara latar dengan tokoh, alur, judul, dan tema adalah hubungan yang membentuk kesatupaduan sehingga tercipta struktur novel yang masuk akal.

This research used a novel entitled Laut Bercerita written by Leila S. Chudori as a material object and the theory of setting as a formal object. The main problem in this research was the various specific functions of the setting of the novel Laut Bercerita, including identification of setting elements, functions of setting, relation between settings, and relation between elements of the novel. The novel Laut Bercerita was selected as the object material of this research based on several reasons. First, novel Laut Bercerita has complete setting with the characteristics. Second, the specific function setting is marked by the appointment of elements of Indonesian history and that setting function is able to describe social conditions of a society and giving a social criticism. Third, there is a relationship between the setting and the other structure. The method of this research are collection methods and data analysis methods. The data collection methods was carried out through literature study to obtain empirical facts in the form of qualitative data analytic descriptive methods. The method of data analysis uses descriptive analytic method which is done by descriptive the facts, in the elements of setting, functions of setting, and relationships between novel structures. The results of this research are as follows. First, the novel Laut Bercerita consists of place, time, and social settings. Place setting comprises major and minor settings. The time setting includes 1991, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2007. The social setting can be seen based on upper, middle, and lower social classes of the characters. Second, the setting of the novel Laut Bercerita has a specific function, namely as metaphorical element and as atmosphere, and as social criticism. Third, the relation between settings the novel Laut Bercerita is a coherent relation. The element of setting has a relation with other elements of the novel. These elements are characters, plot, title and theme. The relation of setting with character, plot, title, and theme is a relation that establishes a unity in order to create a reasonable novel structure.
