Makna Tiga Ikon Gajah Di Gereja Saint Pierre Aulnay Prancis Pada Abad Ke-12

Tiga ikon gajah yang terdapat pada bagian capital columns Gereja Saint Pierre Aulnay memiliki keunikan untuk diteliti. Tiga ikon gajah memiliki kalimat dibagian atasnya dan tidak dijumpai pada ikon gajah di gereja lain. Melalui Physiologus karya Uskup Theobald pada abad ke-11 sebagai sumber pengetahuan yang dijadikan bahan untuk memproduksi ikon diharapkan dapat diungkap makna tiga ikon gajah beserta tulisannya. Tesis ini bertujuan memberi makna pada tiga ikon gajah di gereja tersebut. Permasalahan yang diangkat berasal dari bilangan angka tiga yang identik dengan Trinitas dan menjadi kesimpulan final. Dalam proses pemaknaan dengan metode hermeneutika, Trinitas dan bilangan angka tiga tersebut diuji lagi kebenarannya. Apabila terdapat kontradiktif pada Trinitas dengan angka tiga maka akan memberi celah bagi pemaknaan baru bagi tiga ikon gajah. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa ikon. Hasil dari investigasi terhadap data menunjukkan biarawan Saint Cyprien yang tergabung ke dalam Ordo Cluny menggunakan pengetahuan atau informasi dari Physiologus karya Uskup Theobald dalam rangka menciptakan tiga ikon gajah di Gereja Saint Pierre Aulnay. Makna yang ingin diungkapkan adalah penyetaraan karakter domba dengan gajah. Kemudian ada nilai edukasi yang diperlihatkan dilekatkan pada gajah merupakan sebuah tindakan agar peristiwa tersebut dikenang oleh setiap orang yang berkunjung ke Gereja Saint Pierre Aulnay.

The three elepahant icons medieval elephant icons which were found in capital column section of Saint Pierre Aulnay Church have their own uniqueness to study. The three elephant icons have a sentence on the top that is not found on elephant icons in the other churches. Through Physiologus, the work of Bishop Theobald in 11th century as a source of knowledge used as material to produce icons, it is expected that the meaning of three elephant icons and their writing can be revealed. This thesis aim to give a meaning to the three elephant icons in the church. The issue raised comes from the number three which is identical with the concept of the Trinity and becomes the final conclusion. In the process of the menaing through the methode of hermeneutics, the Trinity and the number three are tested again to reveal the truth. If there is any contradiction between them, it will create a possibility for new meaning of the three elephant icons. The data used in this research are icons. The results show that the Saint Cyprien monks belonging to the Order of Cluny used the konowledge or information from Physiologus by Bishop Theobald in order to create three elephant icons in Saint Pierre Aulnay Church. The meaning to be expressed is the character equalization of sheep and elephant. In addition, there is an educational value attached to three elephant icons. It is intended that the event would be remembered by everyone who visited Saint Pierre Aulnay Chuch
