The Practices of Patriarchal Family System in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Series

Patriarki dapat didefinisikan sebagai dominasi laki-laki dalam semua aspek masyarakat, yang pada bagian intinya adalah keluarga. Meskipun dianggap sebagai bagian dari masa lalu, patriarki masih dapat dijumpai pada masyarakat Amerika modern. Sebagai upaya untuk melihat operasi patriarki dalam keluarga, skripsi ini menggunakan sudut pandang Cultural criticism dalam mengamati empat buku utama dari seri Twilight: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, dan Breaking Dawn. Skripsi ini mencoba untuk menemukan penerapan patriarki dalam keluarga-keluarga pada seri ini: Cullen, Swan, Volturi, dan kawanan werewolf Quileute. Anilisis difokuskan pada anggota keluarga laki-laki. Sistem keluarga patriarkal diperiksa dengan mengamati peran-peran dalam keluarga yang menunjukkan dominasi laki-laki. Hal ini meliputi posisi pemimpin, pembuat keputusan, pemberi nafkah, dan pelindung dalam keluarga. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa laki-laki mendominasi setiap aspek yang diamati. Terbukti semua keluarga yang diamati menjalankan sistem patriarki.

Patriarchy can be defined as male dominance over all aspects of the society, and at its core is the family. It involves upholding the supposed priority of the male. Despite being considered a thing of the past, patriarchy is still present in modern American society. As an attempt to see the operation of patriarchy within the family, this paper employs Cultural Criticism to examine the four main books of the Twilight series: Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. This paper attempts to find proofs of patriarchy within the families presented in the series: Cullen, Swan, Volturi, and the Quileute werewolf pack. The focus of the analysis is on the male members of the family. The patriarchal family system is examined by observing the roles within the family that demonstrate the domination of the males. They are the positions of leader, decision-maker, provider, and protector. The result of the analysis shows that the males dominate each observed aspect. All observed family indeed abide by the patriarchal system.
