POTRET PEREMPUAN JAWA PADA 1860-1920

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini mengulas perempuan Jawa dalam fotografi pada kurun waktu 1860-1920. Kajian ini didasari atas masih sedikitnya studi sejarah yang menggunakan foto sebagai sumber utama dalam penelitian. Sama halnya dengan sumber-sumber lainnya, melalui foto sebenarnya dapat diketahui fakta sejarah terselubung dengan menggunakan pembacaan semiotika. Arsip foto sangat berguna bagi peneliti sejarah untuk menciptakan tema-tema baru sejarah Indonesia. Di Hindia Belanda saat itu, kehadiran fotografi sebagai bagian dari modernitas, tidak hanya menggambarkan seni dan bisnis semata. Melainkan juga merupakan simbol status sosial dan gaya hidup orang-orang yang dipotret. Hal ini dapat dilihat khususnya dalam potret perempuan Jawa. Melalui foto, perempuan Jawa dapat diidentifikasi ke dalam beberapa hal: golongan elite dan non-elite, perbedaan ciri-ciri fisik, dan imajinasi orang-orang Eropa (orientalisme). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode sejarah, yang diawali dengan pemilihan tema hingga proses penulisan. Sumber yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah arsip foto, khususnya potret-potret yang menggambarkan perempuan Jawa dari KITLV Digital Image Library dan Arsip Nasional Republik Indonesia. Satu persatu, foto-foto tersebut dianalisis dengan sumber sejarah lainnya yang dapat mendukung, seperti buku dan artikel.

ABSTRACT This study reviews the Javanese women in photography during the period from 1860-1920. This study is based on the fact which there is still a few studies of history that use photo as primary sources in research. Inline with other resources, actually, through photo can be known the covered historical facts by using semiotic readings. Photo archives are very useful for the history researchers to create new themes history of Indonesia. At that time, the Dutch East Indies, the presence of photography as part of modernity, not only describes art and business. But also a symbol of social status and lifestyle of the person portrayed. This can be seen particularly in Javanese women portrait. Through photographs, Javanese women can be identified in several ways: the elite and non-elite, differences in physical characteristics, and imagination of the people of Europe (Orientalism). The method used in this study is the historical method, which begins with the selection of the terms to the writing process. The sources used in this study is an archive of photos, especially the portraits which descibe the Javanese women from KITLV Digital Image Library and the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia. One by one, that photos are analyzed with the others historical sources which can support it, such as books and articles.
