Reformulating Dracula in the Early 21st Century: Genre Analysis of 24 Vampire Films

Vampir telah menjadi fenomena dalam sastra dan budaya barat. Terlebih, keberadaannya dalam karya sastra secara terus menerus dan didistribusikan secara luas membuat vampire tidak hanya terkenal di dunia barat, tetapi juga hampir di seluruh belahan dunia. Seiring dengan kepopulerannya, banyak sekali penelitian dengan objek ini baik sebagai mitos ataupun karakter dalam karya sastra. Penelitian-penelitian tersebut menyimpulkan adanya transformasi vampire baik sebagai mitos atauuin sebagai karakter dalam karya sastra Akan tetapi, penelitian-penelitian karya sastra sebagian besar menganggap sama antara vampire dan Drakula. Padahal, keduanya berbeda. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bermaksud menganalisa secara lebih khusus tentang perkembangan formula karya sastra, terutama film, yang mengangkat tokoh Drakula, khususnya film, di awal abad ke dua puluh satu. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini juga akan membahas bagaimana hubugan perkembangan formula dengan kondisi sosial yang melatarinya. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitia kualitatif dengan data yang diambil dari kajian pustaka. Dasar teori yang digunakan dalam analisis adalah genre analysis yang meletakan satu karya sastra dalam konteks teks itu sendiri dan juga konteks sosial yang melatarinya. Sebagai hasil dari penelitian dari dua puluh empat film Drakula yang diproduksi sejak tahun 2000 sampai 2014, disimpukan bahwa sebagian besar film mengkombinasikan beberapa genre. Terdapat sebelas film horor murni, delapan horor aksi, dua horor drama, satu horor petualangan, satu horor sci-fi, dan satu horor roman. Selain itu, peneliti menemukan lima formula baru yang meliputi: 1. Perubahan fokus tema yang terdiri dari penekanan unsur science dan pengebluran unsur sexuality 2. perubahan motif 3. variasi tokoh dan penokohan yang terdiri dari perubahan tokoh anatagonis menjadi hero dan munculnya perempuan sebagai salah satu hero 4. variasi latar dan 5. penggantian property. Lebih jauh, perkembangan formula dalam film Drakula selain sebagai konsekuensi dari kombinasi genre, juga merupakan respon terhadap isu-isu sosial sekarang ini seperti modernitas dan rasionalitas, serta fenomena wanita masa kini.

Vampire has been a phenomenon in western literature and culture. As many literary works featuring vampire are produced every years and get the interest of the audiences, the creature becomes even embedded in the heart of not only western people, but also major people in the world. Currently, the researches on the creature either as a part of the myth or a character in literary works is so booming. They conclude that there is transformation of vampire both in myth and literary work. The research on literary works mostly generalizes vampire and Dracula as similar terms refer to blood sucker in general. In fact, those two terms actually refer to different signified. Therefore, this research aims to discuss specifically on the development of literary works, especially film featuring Dracula character as the fact that such Stoker's story is still adapted in nowadays era. The discussion focuses on the conventions and inventions of Dracula films in the early twenty first century and how those new formulas are related to the social background. This research is qualitative research which data are collected from the library visit. In addition, the basic theory used is genre analysis which situates texts within textual and social context. In the field of American Studies, such analysis is relevant to Mc Dawell's theory of past, present and future which supports interdisciplinary studies of time development. As the finding of the research on twenty four films produced during 2000 to 2014 the researcher concludes that most of them mix the elements of some genres. There are eleven pure horror Dracula films, eight horror action, two horror drama, one horror adventure, one horror sci-fi, and one horror romance. Furthermore, the researcher found five formula inventions including: 1. the shifting themes which include the emergence of science and the blurring of sexuality; 2. the variation of the stereotypical characters which includes the turn of the villain into hero and the challenge of women as another hero; 3. the changing motive; 4. the variation of setting, and 5. the replacement of properties. In the further analysis, the development of the formulas is certainly the result of the mixing genres, and also the respond to two major issues flourished in nowadays era such as the issue of modernity and rationality and the phenomenon of New Women and Now Women.
