Mengungkap Tekstualitas Historis dan Historisitas Tekstual: Kajian Puitika Kultural STephen Greenblatt pada Teks A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengungkap teks Julian Barnes A History of the World in 10 ½ Chapters (1989)--selanjutnya ditulis HW10½C (10 setengah bab atau chapters). Teks Barnes tersebut berisi peristiwa faktual (berita), peristiwa sakral, peristiwa masa lampau, mitos, mimpi, dan sebagainya yang ditulis sebagaimana bentuk narasi. Barnes mengambil satu narasi dan mengaitkannya dengan narasi lain, dan menyusunnya menjadi serangkaian narasi yang terdiri dari 10½. Penelitian ini menggunakan Puitika Kultural Stephen Greenblatt, yang tidak membedakan antara fakta dan fiksi, subjektivitas dan objektivitas pengarang, yang mempertimbangkan produksi dan sirkulasi teks, serta relasinya di dalam formasi diskursif. Cara kerja Puitika Kultural dalam penelitian ini mengungkap makna teks HW10½C adalah dengan mengkaji: 1) tindak kepengarangan, yakni melalui aspek biografis diri-pengarang kaitannya dengan teks, 2) representasi yang terdapat di dalam teks, dan 3) pembacaan reflektif atas berbagai hal yang kedua pengkajian sebelumnya. Ketiga pengkajian tersebut dilakukan terus-menerus, saling berkelindan dan tidak dapat dipisahkan satu sama lain, dari persoalan yang melingkupi teks, yakni kondisi budaya, ekonomi, sosial, politik, konvensi kesusastraan, dan berbagai diskursus lain pada rentang historis tertentu. Kesimpulan dalam penelitian ini yakni sebagai berikut: pertama, teks Barnes adalah manifestasi dari dirinya sebagai pengarang Inggris yang rasional, kritis, liberal, sekuler, ateis sekaligus moralis; Barnes memiliki perhatian besar terhadap sejarah pembentukan-diri (self-fashioning) yang terjalin dari pengalaman, pemikiran, karya- karyanya yang terjalin dengan bacaan, keluarga, budaya, agama, dan masyarakatnya. Menulis teks adalah praktik kultural Barnes yang sebenarnya bukan hanya manifestasi tindak kepengarangan, tapi juga merepresentasikan suatu efek dalam suatu budaya dari melekat pada teks Barnes, seperti pada yang kedua, bahwa teks Barnes merepresentasikan narasi dalam 10½ mode simbolik secara tematis yang melibatkan persoalan sejarah, agama, politik, mitos, seni, cinta, dan kapitalisme. Ketiga, Barnes mempersoalkan nilai sosio kultural, diskursus sejarah dan politik pada dekade 1980 secara problematis. Pada satu sisi tidak mengabaikan pesan-pesan moral dan menentang narasi besar modernisme, tapi juga tidak sepenuhnya meninggalkan diskursus sejarah teleologis. Pada satu pihak Barnes menolak proyek Thatcherisme, Fukuyama, kapitalisme, dominasi Amerika dalam konstelasi politik global, tapi pada lain perlawanannya terhadap proyek kekuasaan hegemonik tersebut. Dengan demikian, teks Barnes justru menjauh dari upaya perlawanan terhadap kekuasaan.

The study aims to invent Julian Barnes' text A History of the World in 10½ Chapters (1989)--furthermore it was writen by HW10½C. The text contains the factual events (news), fictional scenes, sacred, imagination, myth, dreams, ideas, memory, and other the past narration that used for making up and connecting its others, and compile them into a series of narrative consisting of 10½ narrations. The study used Stephen Greenblatt's Cultural Poetics which does not distinguish between the fact and fiction, subjective and objective author, in order to understand the production and circulation of the text and its relations in discursive formation. The workings of poetic cultural in this study inventing the meaning of the text HW10½C by identifing: 1) the acts of the authorship, through aspects of biographic and its relations to the text, 2) the representations contained in the text, and 3) a reflective reading on the matters related in the two previously identification. The three ways of working were conducted for reading continually, and it cannot be separated from one another, from the surrounding issues of the text as well, namely the condition of cultural, economic, social, political, literary conventions, and various other discourses at a certain historical period. The conclusion of this study is as follows: first, Barnes text is a manifestation of himself as British author rational, critical, liberal, secular, atheist once moralist; Barnes has a great attention to the history of life in industrial society. It looks at the formation of self (self-fashioning) were established from experience, thinking, his works are interwoven with readings, family, culture, religion, and society. To write the text is Barnes cultural practice who is not only a manifestation of acts of authorship, but also represents an effect within a culture of attached to the text, as in the second, that the text represents the narrative in 10½ mode symbolic thematically involving historical problems, religion, politics, myth, art, love, and capitalism. Third, Barnes challenged the socio-cultural, historical and political discourse in the 1980s is problematic. On the other side, it does not ignore the moral value and oppose the huge narratives of modernism, but also it is not completely abandon teleological historical discourse. On the one side, Barnes rejected Thatcherism, Fukuyama, capitalism, American dominance in the global political constellation, but on the other side he is stuck in a problematic strategy that actually disrupt opposition to the hegemonic power project. Thus, the text keeps away from the efforts of the purposing resistance to the authority.
