The planetary gears in the final drive system of the ZX870H-LCH excavator experienced recurring failures, characterized by a significant reduction in service life from approximately 1,307 hours to 996 hours, and subsequently to 445 hours of operation. This study aimed to identify the failure mode, analyze the material's mechanical properties, and evaluate its compliance with applicable standards. The methodology included chemical composition analysis using Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Micro Vickers hardness testing, metallographic examination, and Ogoshi wear testing on the core, transition, and surface regions of the gear cross-section. Chemical composition results classified the material as DIN 1.7218 (25CrMo4) alloy steel, with Cr and Mo contents exceeding those reported in the comparative literature. Hardness testing revealed a significant gradient, with values of 473.6 HVN at the core, 804.1 HVN in the transition zone, and 1288.8 HVN at the surface. These results were consistent with the ferrite-pearlite microstructure in the core and the martensitic structure at the surface, which formed as a result of rapid cooling (quenching). Ogoshi wear testing demonstrated that the specific wear rate decreased as hardness increased, dropping from 9.83933E-5 mm3/(kg.m) at the core to 1.70142E-5 mm3/(kg.m) at the surface. The failure was identified as fatigue-induced fracture involving wear, pitting, crack initiation, and crack propagation. The sharp hardness gradient between the ductile core and the hard but brittle surface was considered a potential cause of stress concentration in the transition zone, thereby accelerating crack initiation.
