The rising value and mobility of motor vehicles in urban areas have led to a high risk of traffic accidents caused by speeding. One traffic engineering strategy to slow down the vehicle speeds and mitigate accident risks involves the use of traffic-calming devices, specifically speed control humps (commonly referred to as road humps). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of three types of these traffic calming such as speed bumps, speed humps, and speed tables with focus in reducing the speeds of motorcycles and passenger cars, analyze how physical characteristics and vehicle types influence speed reduction performance, and to assess the compliance of their dimensions with the Regulation of the Minister of Transportation Republic Indonesia No. PM 14 of 2021.

The research was conducted at 30 locations within the UGM and UNY campus areas using a speed gun to measure vehicle speeds and collecting data on 1,800 vehicles, with the 85th-percentile speed (V85) serving as the primary parameter. Data analysis employed t-tests, ANOVA F-tests, multiple linear regression modeling, and classical assumption tests. Variables hypothesized to influence the results included initial vehicle speed (measured as area 1), the height and slope of the traffic-calming road humps, and dummy variables such as the road markings existing, the road humps type (speed bump, speed hump, or speed table), and the vehicle type (motorcycle or passenger car).

The results indicate that the initial average speed of motorcycles (29.20 km/h) was higher than that of passenger cars (23.52 km/h). The road humps caused an average speed reduction of 10.41 km/h for motorcycles and 10.75 km/h for passenger cars. Among the three types tested, the speed table proved most effective at reducing speed, achieving an average total reduction of 13.31 km/h, followed by the speed hump (10.88 km/h) and the speed bump (7.55 km/h). Based on a multiple linear regression analysis using the stepwise method, the equation for speed reduction (?V) was determined to be ?V = 1.329 + 0.433(height) + 0.239(initial speed) - 1.695(vehicle type), with an adjusted R² value of 51.62%. This indicates that the three variables collectively account for 51.62% of the variation in speed reduction (?V), while the remainder is influenced by factors or variables outside the scope of this study. These findings demonstrate that road humps height is the most dominant factor in reducing vehicle speed. Furthermore, an evaluation of the physical dimension of the road humps revealed that the majority of those at the research sites did not meet applicable regulatory standards.
