The expanding role of Learning Experience Design (LxD) as the primary mediator of learning experience opens an ontological gap that performance metrics cannot answer. Piaget demonstrated that cognitive adaptation requires structural conditions not automatically met when learners produce measurable performance. This study evaluates the interaction between LxD and the mechanisms of assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration within Piaget's cognitive constructivist framework, with Piaget serving as the normative standard against which LxD is assessed, because the question of what kind of process unfolds and what kind of understanding takes shape has not yet received a philosophical answer.
This research reflects on the conceptual coherence between Piaget's claim about equilibration and LxD's claim about designed experience, rather than collecting new data from particular subjects or communities. This philosophical literature review employs three analytical techniques. Conceptual analysis identifies and tests the definitions of key concepts, such as genuine equilibration and performative adaptation, for their consistency across contexts. Argument analysis reconstructs premises and evaluates the logical validity of the claims each framework advances. Comparative analysis weighs the positions of Piaget and LxD against each other to determine whether their differences are genuine or merely terminological. All three techniques are guided by Davidson's principle of charity, so that LxD and Piagetian theory are each examined in their strongest version before being evaluated.
Genuine equilibration and performative adaptation differ in kind, not degree. Genuine equilibration requires a structural change in modes of thinking, an understanding of logical necessity, and a process that proceeds through reflective abstraction. Designed experience interacts with Piaget's mechanisms through three ontologically distinct modes, namely facilitation, hindrance, and ontological transformation. The third mode is the most critical. It is here that the cognitive function required for equilibration shifts from the subject to an external system. From these three analyses, six philosophical conditions for genuine equilibration are derived, with epistemic agency as the logical precondition for all the others. These six conditions converge on the Principle of Non-Substitution, which this study formulates as its central contribution. LxD supports genuine equilibration if and only if it does not substitute for the cognitive function required for equilibration. What determines this is not the intensity of intervention, but the kind of function being intervened upon.
