Objective

While ethnocentrism in developed nations has been discussed in the context of social identity and product quality, ethnocentrism in developing nations can be viewed from a different perspective - specifically, one involving moral considerations in purchasing decisions. In developing nations, an excess of imported products can negatively impact societal well-being and the national economy. A key challenge is that consumers in developing nations often rate imports more favorably than domestic products, whereas consumers in developed nations tend to rate domestic products more highly than those from other countries, particularly developing ones. Drawing on Hunt and Vitell's Ethical Decision-Making Theory, this study aims to investigate the influence of consumer ethnocentrism on the intention to purchase domestic products. An issue-contingent model is employed to explain how ethnocentrism affects purchase intention, with ethical judgment acting as a mediator and psychological proximity, perceived quality, and perceived value serving as moderators.

Design/Methodology

An online survey was conducted with 1.145 respondents in Indonesia via the Jakpat survey platform. Smart PLS 4 software and the PLS-SEM analysis method were used to analyze the data, covering both measurement and structural model analyses. The validity and reliability of the variable measurement indicators were confirmed.

Findings

The results indicate that consumer ethnocentrism positively influences the intention to purchase domestic products, exerting both a direct effect and an indirect effect mediated by ethical judgment. Psychological proximity - representing moral intensity - does not moderate the influence of consumer ethnocentrism on purchase intention via ethical judgment. Perceived value moderates the influence of consumer ethnocentrism on purchase intention via ethical judgment, whereas perceived quality does not moderate this relationship. Gender and Social desirability bias were included as control variables.

Originality

This study enriches Ethical Decision-Making Theory by demonstrating that consumer ethnocentrism influences the intention to purchase domestic products through ethical evaluation. Ethnocentric values are so strong that the influence of ethnocentrism on the intention to purchase domestic products mediated by ethical judgment is not further amplified by psychological proximity. In Indonesia, as a developing nation, ethnocentrism plays a necessary role amidst unfavorable economic conditions. The intention to purchase domestic products can be explained by an individual's ethical judgment, which is in turn influenced by strong ethnocentric values.
