This research aims to understand the self-expression of the poet Kaneko Misuzu as reflected in her three poems, Hachi to Kamisama, Hoshi to Tanpopo, and Tsumotta Yuki. This study applies M.H. Abrams's expressive approach in literary criticism, which centers on the relationship between the author and their work. While these three poems each have distinct objects, they all convey empathy towards the small and often overlooked things found in the surrounding environment.

This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, which involves collecting data, analyzing it, and elaborating it into a narrative description. The study begins by gathering data on Kaneko Misuzu's life background, followed by the stages of heuristic and hermeneutic reading. It then proceeds to an analysis of expression in the three poems based on M.H. Abrams's theory, focusing on diction, figurative language, imagery, and tone.

The results of this study indicate that the self-expression conveyed by Kaneko Misuzu through her three poems reflects a profound sensitivity toward small living beings and elements of nature, such as bees, stars, pebbles, dandelion roots, and snow. However, these three poems are not merely a reflection of her empathy for nature; they also provide concrete evidence that a literary work reflects its author, and that the author's life background is the key to understanding the deeper meaning of the work, as proposed by M.H. Abrams in his expressive approach theory.
