The Indonesian sugar industry continues to face challenges in improving production performance and process efficiency, particularly during sugarcane juice extraction at the milling station. In practice, juice extraction is still largely governed by empirical approaches, while numerical models capable of representing the interaction between fiber-matrix deformation and fluid flow within prepared cane remain limited. Fundamentally, juice extraction is a hydro-mechanical process in a two-phase porous medium involving coupled solid deformation and fluid flow. This study therefore aims to develop a numerical model of sugarcane juice extraction based on two-phase porous media mechanics using a coupled pore pressure–displacement formulation to provide a more comprehensive representation of the extraction process.

The research integrated experimental testing and numerical simulation. Experimental tests were conducted to determine the physical, mechanical, and morphological characteristics of prepared cane at different preparation index (PI) values and to evaluate the effects of pressure, compression speed, and PI on extraction performance. The experimental data were subsequently used as input parameters for the numerical model, in which prepared cane was represented as a two-phase porous medium. Model validation was performed by comparing simulated force responses with confined axial compression test results. The validated model was then applied to an industrial-scale milling system to evaluate force response, pore pressure, deformation, and power requirements.

The results show that pressure, compression speed, and PI affect sugarcane juice extraction performance. An estimated optimum PI of approximately 90.8% was obtained, with a recommended operational range of 90–93%. The numerical model satisfactorily represented the mechanical and hydro-mechanical responses of prepared cane, as indicated by the agreement between simulated force responses and experimental compression results. At industrial scale, the model predicted a total power requirement of 320.93 kW, which falls within the recommended empirical range for a 5,500 TCD sugar factory. A limited comparison with operational data showed torque errors of 11.3%, 20.1%, and 11.8% for the top, front, and back rolls, respectively, with a mean absolute error of 14.4%. Because the simulated and actual roll speeds were not identical, the comparison was regarded as a limited industrial consistency assessment. Overall, the developed model provides an analytical framework for understanding juice extraction phenomena and supporting the evaluation and optimization of operating parameters and energy efficiency in sugarcane milling stations.
