A pipe rack is a vital structure in gas processing facilities supporting high-pressure piping networks, with loading complexity from fluid operational loads, thermal friction forces, and simultaneous environmental loads. The pipe rack design at CGPX Plant Grissik, South Sumatra in Seismic Design Category (SDC) D, previously used the Equivalent Lateral Force (ELF) method combined entirely with Allowable Stress Design (ASD), an approach with limited capacity to capture the dynamic behaviour of flexible frame structures carrying non-uniform pipe mass across tiers. This study applies Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) based on SNI 1726:2019 combined with a dual design philosophy. Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for strength and Allowable Stress Design (ASD) for serviceability based on SNI 1729:2020, including the Direct Analysis Method (DAM) for second-order effects and initial geometric imperfections.

The design was applied to pipe rack G2 (6 m wide, 52 m long, 10.5 m high, 5 tiers), modelled as a three-dimensional Open Frame in STAAD Pro Connection Version, with frame elements for columns and transverse beams, truss elements for bracing, and fixed column-base supports. Model validity was verified by comparing modelled structural weight against manual calculation. DAM was applied through stiffness reduction, notional loads, and iterative P-Delta analysis per SNI 1729:2020 Chapter C, validated through the axial-force-to-yield-capacity ratio of each critical column. Seismic response was analysed using RSA as the primary method and ELF as a benchmark, following SNI 1726:2019 modal mass participation requirements. Member capacity followed SNI 1729:2020 Chapters D–H for LRFD strength and deflection/drift limits for ASD serviceability, while critical connection capacity was evaluated per Chapter J using STAAD Pro Connection Version and RAM Connection. Long-term corrosion resistance sensitivity was analysed based on ISO 9223:2012.

SDS = 0.343g and SD1 = 0.383g, with RSA mass participation satisfying the ?90% requirement at the 75th mode. Base shears (VRSA,X = 402.34 kN; VRSA,Z = 382.99 kN) were 0.94% and 3.47% higher than ELF. The maximum ?Pr/Py ratio of 0.076 confirmed ?b = 1.0 for all critical columns. All critical elements satisfied LRFD strength with maximum demand-to-capacity (D/C) ratios of 0.722 (beams), 0.431 (columns), and 0.506 (bracing), and ASD serviceability with maximum deflection and drift ratios of 0.23 and 0.631. All critical connections satisfied SNI 1729:2020 Chapter J with a maximum D/C ratio of 0.824 at the 500×500 pedestal base plate. Corrosion sensitivity showed hypothetical capacity reduction remaining within the safety margin of all elements. These results indicate that the RSA-LRFD/ASD method produces a more representative structural response than the existing ELF-ASD method, and all pipe rack G2 elements and connections are confirmed safe against the applicable load combinations.
