The increasing global energy demand has encouraged the development of energy storage technologies capable of improving energy utilization efficiency, including the utilization of waste heat and renewable energy sources. One of the most widely developed technologies is the stratified Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tank, which operates by maintaining the separation between hot and cold water layers, allowing thermal energy to be stored more effectively. The quality of thermal stratification is influenced by several factors, particularly tank geometry and operating conditions. Therefore, this study aimed to design and construct a laboratory-scale stratified Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tank and experimentally investigate the effects of tank head diameter and flow rate on thermal stratification characteristics and thermal energy storage performance.

The experimental study was conducted using three tank head diameters of 12 cm, 16 cm, and 20 cm, combined with three flow rates of 1.0, 1.25, and 1.5 L/min. Temperatur distributions were measured using thermocouples during the charging process and analyzed using the Four Parameter Sigmoid (FPS) method. The thermal performance of the storage tank was evaluated based on the Width of Thermocline (W_{TC}), representing thermal stratification quality, Cumulative Stored Energy (Q_{cum}), representing the amount of stored thermal energy, and the Half-cycle Figure of Merit (FoM?/?), representing the effectiveness of thermal energy storage.

The results showed that increasing the tank head diameter from 12 cm to 20 cm at a flow rate of 1.25 L/min reduced the average thermocline thickness (W_{TC}) from 35.217 cm to 27.800 cm, increased thermal energy loss (C_{lost}) from 17.961 Wh to 20.932 Wh, increased the Half-cycle Figure of Merit (FoM?/?) from 0.854 to 0.868, and resulted in higher cumulative stored energy (Q_{cum}), reaching approximately 230 Wh, 275 Wh, and 310 Wh at the 12th minute for the 12 cm, 16 cm, and 20 cm tank head diameters, respectively. Meanwhile, for the 16 cm tank head, increasing the flow rate from 1.0 to 1.5 L/min increased the average thermocline thickness (W_{TC}) from 30.892 cm to 33.059 cm and C_{lost} from 18.517 Wh to 19.942 Wh, while the average FoM?/? slightly decreased from 0.869 to 0.863. On the other hand, the cumulative stored energy {(Q}_{cum}) at the end of the charging process increased from approximately 268 Wh at a flow rate of 1.0 L/min to 281 Wh at 1.5 L/min. In addition, the validation results demonstrated good agreement between the visualization method and the Four Parameter Sigmoid (FPS) method, indicating that the FPS method is a reliable approach for evaluating thermal stratification characteristics and the performance of stratified thermal energy storage tanks.
