Music that resonates with one’s emotional state is often listened to in daily life, but this resonance is not an objective property of the song; rather, it is the listener’s subjective interpretation, shaped by their personal memories and experiences. Cognitive psychology and neuroscience approach this phenomenon through cause-and-effect mechanisms that explain the influence of acoustic stimuli on the body and brain, but they stop at the mechanisms themselves, failing to address how harmony is experienced from within as a lived event. It is this problem that prompts this study to return to first-person direct experience through Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception, which treats the body and time as a single unity, not as two separate substances.

This study is a qualitative literature review employing a philosophical analytical model, utilizing data from books, scientific articles, and previous research on the experience of listening to music that resonates with an affective mood. The data were analyzed using Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological concepts.

The results of the analysis show that music in harmony with the affective atmosphere does not merely give a temporal form to the retentions-protentions and bodily movements already taking place within the subject, but is experienced through le sentir as a pre-reflective experience that brings the body into contact with the musical world. This harmony occurs when the structure of the music resonates with the way the subject is experiencing time, while simultaneously guiding the body to move and feel before that harmony is articulated by the mind. Because the body always carries the sedimentation of its musical habits and personal experiences, music does not carry the same affective meaning for every subject; rather, it finds its meaning within the history of the body that experiences it.
