AI-driven platforms are increasingly restructuring creative labour across the Global South. Fotoyu, an Indonesian AI-based photography marketplace, has rapidly come to dominate the event-photography profession, automating client matching, payment, and photo distribution through facial recognition. While platform labour scholarship has centred on ride-hailing and delivery, and AI colonialism literature has focused predominantly on North-to-South extraction, the intersection of creative platform labour and intra-South colonial dynamics remains underexamined. Rooted in Critical Political Economy tradition and the emerging field of AI colonialism, this study draws on focus group discussions with twenty Indonesian freelance photographers, supplemented by secondary data and platform analysis. The findings identify three interlocking mechanisms through which Fotoyu reproduces colonial relations: dependency relations, which locks photographers into the platform’s discovery and pricing architecture; heteromation, the uncompensated cognitive and creative labour required in correcting the platform’s AI failures; and displaced discipline, whereby enforcement is outsourced to peers and to the platform’s architectural design. These mechanisms are met not by passivity, but by individualised, structurally foreclosed resistance. The study makes two contributions. It extends AI colonialism scholarship beyond the North-South axis, demonstrating that colonial extraction is defined by operational logic, not geography, and can be reproduced within a single national locus. It also provides a structural account of creative platform labour, complementing interpretive approaches. The case reveals that even domestic platforms can function as colonial actors, challenging narratives that equate AI-driven labour platforms with progress.
