This study aims to analyze the
impact of the "Korean Wave" phenomenon as a key product of South
Korea's creative economy, alongside traditional macroeconomic variables, on
South Korea's exports of consumer goods to the 10 ASEAN member countries.
Grounded in the theories of Cultural Economics and the Gravity Model, this
research re-examines several traditional variables that have yielded
inconsistent results in previous studies. It utilizes secondary panel data
covering the period from 2001 to 2023, comprising a total of 230 observations.
The data analysis employs a Random Effect Model (REM) panel regression with
robust standard error estimation. The findings indicate that South Korea's GDP
per capita, the GDP per capita of the 10 ASEAN member countries, and the
cultural dummy variable (representing Hallyu 2.0 from 2011 onwards) exert a
positive and statistically significant influence on the export volume of South
Korean consumer goods. Conversely, physical barriers such as geographic
distance, exchange rates, and the implementation of non-tariff policies
(represented by the AKFTA dummy) were found to have no significant effect. These
results reveal anomalies regarding the Gravity Model and traditional
macroeconomic factors; geographic distance, exchange rates, and non-tariff
policies are no longer the primary determinants of trade with the 10 ASEAN
member countries. Instead, trade dynamics have shifted and are now driven by
the loyalty of transnational fan communities ("super-national
fandoms") fostered through South Korea's soft power and cultural diplomacy
strategies. The study demonstrates that in the current digital era, inter-state
economic cooperation is no longer solely dependent on non-tariff policies but
increasingly leverages collaboration within creative industries and cultural
trends.
