Film is a form of communication carried out by a group of people in a series of scenes that are documented and distributed with the aim of conveying a message to the audience regarding the context and issues raised in the film. Film is considered a form of mass communication because it can influence the actions and behavior of those who watch it, as film as a medium of communication is classified as effective in conveying messages that are then absorbed and understood by the audience. The Dictator, directed by Larry Charles, is a satirical comedy that portrays a character with an authoritarian leadership style in a Middle Eastern country. Based on the development of criticism thru satire that occurs in the film, this research is motivated by the practice of neo-authoritarianism being carried out in several countries around the world, particularly in Indonesia. This type of research uses a qualitative approach. This research uses a constructivist paradigm, and the data source for this study is a series of scenes from the film The Dictator. The analysis technique used is Umberto Eco's semiotic analysis to interpret the signs, symbols, and codes in the film The Dictator, which point to the implementation of authoritarianism in the country. The results of this research show that the critique of authoritarianism is not conveyed in a moralistic or didactic manner, but rather represented thru radical satire. Satire works by borrowing the codes of power, amplifying them to the most extreme point (hyperbole), and then subverting them (deconstruction) to mock and expose the political system.
