Banda Neira, as a historic archipelagic region, is currently experiencing competition among various tourism development paradigms, namely mass tourism, cultural tourism, high-end tourism, and community-based tourism (CBT). The designation of Banda Neira as a National Strategic Tourism Area (KSPN) in 2025 has further intensified the dynamics of spatial production among the state, tourism capital, and local communities. This research aims to analyze how CBT functions as a strategy for local communities to claim space amid the contestation of these various tourism regimes. The study employs a qualitative method with a participatory ethnographic approach, using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and critical discourse analysis. This research draws on Henri Lefebvre's framework of the production of space and Robert Shiller's narrative economics to interpret the relationship between the production of space and the production of narrative within the dynamics of tourism in Banda Neira.

The findings show that CBT in Banda Neira does not exist as a single paradigm but is instead divided into two coexisting models: organic CBT, which relies on communal solidarity and grassroots participation, and patrimonialistic CBT, which operates through social capital, elite networks, and control over tourism assets. Both models form alternative spaces that continually negotiate with the pressures of mass tourism, high-end tourism, and cultural tourism within the process of producing Banda Neira's tourism space. The research also finds that local communities play a dominant role in defining Banda as a tourist destination through everyday practices, the utilization of personal assets, and the production of authenticity narratives that influence tourist behavior. On the other hand, tourism development has also given rise to contradictions in the form of cultural commodification and spatial exclusivity. Thus, CBT in Banda Neira functions not only as an alternative economic strategy but also as a dialectical mechanism of spatial politics and local community resistance against the domination of the state and tourism capital.
