This study examines the systemic pressures faced by queer individuals in Yogyakarta, specifically the stigma and marginalization resulting from the mechanisms of the heterosexual matrix. The urgency of this research lies in the role of the informal Queer Language Club (QLC) community in Yogyakarta as a safe space for identity negotiation through everyday practices that challenge binary norms.
This is a qualitative study in the field of philosophy. The material object of this study is the QLC community in Yogyakarta, while the formal objects used as analytical tools are the heterosexual matrix and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity. The method employed is phenomenology; activities within the QLC are understood as the lived experiences of the subjects and analyzed through a Butlerian perspective. The research results reveal three main findings. First, the heterosexual matrix operates rigidly to enforce binary gender coherence. Second, the QLC community engages in subversive bodily acts through queer language practices and body aesthetics. Third, the QLC community facilitates a transition from subversion to conscious collective resistance (agency) through the provision of safe spaces. Collectively, these practices work from within the structure to disrupt the stability of the normative gender order in Indonesia.
