As generative AI systems like DALL-E produce increasingly sophisticated imagery, they challenge traditional boundaries of artistic categorization. This thesis applies Noël Carroll's analytical philosophy of art to the emerging phenomenon of AI-generated imagery produced by systems such as DALL-E.
This research then raises three critical questions: How does DALL-E's mechanistic image formation process align with fundamental theories of analytical art philosophy? When tested using historical narrative methods, what is the ontological status of AI imagery, and can it demonstrate the necessary evolutionary links to previous artistic traditions? Finally, to what extent does human involvement via textual prompting actually qualify as artistic expression within Carroll's intentionalist framework?
Relying on Carroll's analytical art theory, narrative understanding, and crucially, his commitment to intentionalism, I demonstrate that DALL-E's imagery lacks the historical continuity and deliberate communicative agency required for artistic meaning. Furthermore, I conclude that Moderate Actual Intentionalism (MAI) remains substantially defensible—not as a flawless theory, but as the most philosophically honest and empirically accurate framework for understanding meaning in art and literature, and thus the most effective lens for recognizing the ontological void at the heart of AI-generated images.
