This research is a social
philosophy study that emphasizes an ontological examination of the status and
nature of the Indonesian punk subculture on social media. Starting from the
phenomenon of the expansion of the interaction space of the Indonesian punk
subculture toward the digital ecosystem thru the mediation of social media
platforms (Instagram and TikTok) and the hypothesis that the commodification of
the Indonesian punk subculture on social media gradually causes an implosion of
meaning within the Indonesian punk subculture. This research aims to analyze
the commodification of Indonesian punk subculture on social media to identify
the forms and outcomes of commodification, and then reexamine the analysis
using Jean Baudrillard's theory of “Simulation” to uncover the mechanisms and
levels of commodification that have occurred.
This research is a qualitative
literature study with a field-based philosophical perspective. The material
object of the Indonesian punk subculture is excavated from literature archives,
digital documentation, and observations of digital community interactions on
Instagram and TikTok platforms. The material object will be analyzed using Jean
Baudrillard's theory. The results of the analysis are examined within three
conceptual frameworks: the simulacra variables (the precession of simulacra and
deterrence mechanisms), the simulation process (the four phases of image), and implosion
of meaning (ecstasy communication).
This research yields two main
conclusions. First, the form of commodification of the punk subculture found on
Instagram and TikTok platforms is in the form of the commodification of the
pillars of the punk subculture. The commodification of these pillars further
expands the negative stigma of the punk subculture in society. Thus, it
ultimately triggers early indications of meaning implosion due to the
continuously repeating simulation cycle. Second, from the perspective of Jean
Baudrillard, the mechanism of commodification operates thru the stages of
simulation and the ecstasy of communication. At the simulation stage, the
authentic values of the punk subculture are commodified to an extreme and
absolute level, resulting in a pure simulacrum order that triggers the
implosion of meaning. At the level of pure simulacrum, forms of resistance
within the punk subculture transform into mere commodities that lose their
historical depth of meaning within social media. That conclusion unequivocally
proves that the commodification of punk subculture within the social media
ecosystem gradually causes an implosion of meaning in Indonesian punk
subculture.
