kontemporer melalui lensa psikoanalisis.
novel Egosentris menunjukkan kecenderungan disorganized attachment,
resolusi konflik dengan memunculkan konsep destruction as the cause of being.
Terakhir, Dalam novel Egosentris, penulis mencurahkan katarsis
pribadi tokoh agama, tetapi menyepelekan ilmu kesehatan jiwa.
This
study aims to examine the complexity of interpersonal relationships in
contemporary Indonesian literature through a psychoanalytic lens. Syahid
Muhammad’s novels Paradigma and Egosentris were selected as the subject of this
study because they representatively depict relationship dynamics marked by
internal conflict and recurring relational patterns. This phenomenon indicates
a struggle between two fundamental human drives: Eros (the drive for life,
creation, and unity) and Thanatos (the drive for destruction and annihilation).
This study employs two research questions. First, how is the struggle between
Eros and Thanatos represented in the attachment patterns of the main characters
in the novel Paradigma dan Egosentris? Second, how does Repetition Compulsion
function as a manifestation of Thanatos through insecure attachment in the
relationships of the main characters in the novel Paradigma dan Egosentris? To
address these questions, this study will utilize a qualitative method with a
psychoanalytic literary criticism approach. The primary theoretical framework
used is Sigmund Freud’s theory of Eros and Thanatos and the concept of
repetition compulsion. These theories will then be integrated with John Bowlby
and Mary Ainsworth’s Attachment Theory to analyze the roots of the characters’
relational patterns. The findings of this study are as follows. First, Fatih in
the novel Egosentris exhibits a tendency toward disorganized attachment,
whereas Rana in the novel Paradigma tends toward avoidant attachment. Second,
the struggle between Eros and Thanatos in Fatih appears balanced, so the
emergence of both drives creates a confusing impulse, whereas in Rana it
appears lopsided because she is more dominated by the Thanatos drive. Third,
Fatih’s repetition compulsion—shaped by a mother’s parenting style that
expressed love through anger and criticism—leads to ambivalent behavior in
adulthood, whereas Rana’s father’s absence drives her to extreme independence,
leaving her perpetually in situations where she feels she needs no one else.
Fourth, Fatih and Rana undergo a conflict resolution process by introducing the
concept of destruction as the cause of being. Finally, in the novel Egosentris,
the author channels his own catharsis by commenting on the urgent call for
society to stop trivializing others’ pain and learn to appreciate the invisible
burdens. Furthermore, in the novel Paradigma, the author uses catharsis to
criticize a society that uses religion to pass judgment and glorifies the
personal experiences of religious figures, while downplaying the importance of
mental health science.
