Batak society, which adheres to a
patrilineal system, structurally places women in a subordinate position. This
condition is also represented in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap (2022), which
serves as a real portrait of the dynamics of inequality within the Batak family
as well as the complexity of power imbalance within it. Grounded in Michel
Foucault's theory of power relations and employing Gunther Kress and Theo van
Leeuwen's multimodal discourse analysis method, this study seeks to understand
how the process of subjugating the daughter occurs within the father-child
relationship in the film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap (2022), as well as how this power
imbalance is reproduced within the film. The results of the study show that the
subjugation of the daughter in this film does not occur through direct
coercion, but through discourse that flows from the father, the mother, and is
then internalized by the daughter. This study also finds that the
internalization of Batak customary values plays a role in reproducing and legitimizing
power relations within the family. The mother, in this case, is not only a
victim but also an agent who channels the father's power to his children,
particularly to the daughter. In this regard, the daughter then internalizes
this discourse so that it feels like a choice, rather than coercion. The
imbalance of power relations is also reproduced through the film's narrative,
in which Sarma, as the daughter, is not given space for negotiation, and the
one moment she attempts to do so is framed as an emotional outburst rather than
a valid argument. Thus, power operates when the subject is unaware of it as
power, and the film itself becomes a cultural product that reproduces this
inequality.
