This study examines hustle culture among students at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) as a mechanism of capital accumulation in preparing for the transition to the workforce, rather than a mere lifestyle trend. Amid the devaluation of bachelor's degrees (credential inflation) and the stagnation of formal sector absorption of university graduates, students are driven to continuously accumulate non-academic capital through organizational involvement, internships, competitions, and entrepreneurship simultaneously as preparation for navigating labor market uncertainty. This study aims to address two questions: how social class backgrounds differentiate students' interpretations of hustle culture practices, and how students convert these activities into capital accumulation in order to navigate this transition. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, conducted through in-depth interviews and non-participant observation with nine UGM student informants selected purposively based on the Single Tuition Fee (Uang Kuliah Tunggal/UKT) categories to represent three social classes. Data analysis draws on a synthesis of Pierre Bourdieu's Theory of Practice (habitus, field, capital, doxa, and illusio) and Byung-Chul Han's Burnout Society theory (achievement society, self-exploitation, burnout, and animal laborans).

The findings reveal that capital accumulation through hustle culture is sharply stratified along class lines: for lower-class students, it operates as a survival strategy (taste of necessity) to ensure continuity in their transition to the workforce; for middle-class students, as a positional defense mechanism against the threat of downward mobility; and for the upper class as an instrument of distinction, mediated by a taste for luxury. The Bourdieu-Han synthesis reveals that although all classes are entrapped in illusio and self-exploitation that ultimately leads to burnout, the burdens and costs of recovery are unequal, such that capital accumulation through hustle culture ultimately functions as a mechanism for reproducing social inequality in the transition to the workforce.
