This study examines the representation of Buddhist values in Kenji Miyazawa’s poem “Ame ni mo Makezu,” which is still taught in Japanese schools today. “Ame ni mo Makezu” not only recounts the journey of life but also reflects the beliefs held by Kenji Miyazawa. This study aims to analyze the representation of Buddhist values in the poem to reveal the overall meaning of its content.
This study employs Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory to uncover the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings within each stanza of the poem. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data comprising the poem itself, the poet’s biography, Buddhist literature, and other supporting scholarly literature.
The results of the study indicate that the overall meaning of the poem is both an ethical prayer and a spiritual statement regarding the ideal of becoming a perfect human being capable of living in harmony with nature, overcoming personal desires, leading a simple life, remaining resilient in the face of trials, and wholeheartedly dedicating oneself to helping others in accordance with the values of Buddhist teachings.
